Food Flows into Gaza Still Far Below Targets, Warns WFP

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a stark warning regarding the dire food security situation in Gaza, stating that current food aid deliveries are significantly below the required levels to meet the needs of the population. Despite ongoing efforts, the gap between the aid delivered and the aid needed continues to widen, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Critical Shortfall in Aid Deliveries

According to WFP, just to cover basic humanitarian food and nutrition assistance needs in Gaza, more than 62,000 tons of life-saving aid are required every month. However, recent assessments indicate that food consumption has plummeted, with over one in three people in Gaza now going days at a time without eating. More than 500,000 people—nearly a quarter of Gaza’s population—are enduring famine-like conditions, while the remaining population faces emergency levels of hunger.

The situation is further compounded by a sharp rise in acute malnutrition. In Gaza City, malnutrition levels among children under five have quadrupled in two months, reaching 16.5 percent. This signals a critical deterioration in nutritional status and a sharp rise in the risk of death from hunger and malnutrition. Over 320,000 children, the entire population under five in Gaza, are at risk of acute malnutrition, with thousands suffering from severe acute malnutrition, the deadliest form of undernutrition.

Operational Challenges and Access Restrictions

The WFP has been working tirelessly to deliver aid, but operational challenges and access restrictions have hindered its efforts. Since May 21, when border crossings reopened to limited amounts of aid, WFP teams have dispatched over 18,000 metric tons of food assistance into Gaza. Despite these efforts, the food delivered to date is still a tiny fraction of what the population of over two million people needs to survive.

The lack of fuel, water, and other vital aid continues to undermine efforts to prevent famine and deaths among children. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report indicates that food access across Gaza is now alarmingly erratic and extremely perilous. The closure of crossings and damage to infrastructure have severely impacted warehousing and storage capacity, with more than 50 percent destroyed.

Urgent Call for Action

In response to the escalating crisis, WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We need to flood Gaza with large-scale food aid, immediately and without obstruction, and keep it flowing each and every day to prevent mass starvation.” The agency is calling for immediate, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access across Gaza to scale up the delivery of life-saving food, nutrition, water, and medicine. Without that, mothers and fathers will continue to face a parent’s worst nightmare, powerless to save a starving child from a condition we are able to prevent.

Conclusion

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with food aid deliveries still far below the required levels to meet the needs of the population. The WFP and other humanitarian organizations continue to face significant challenges in delivering aid due to operational constraints and access restrictions. Immediate action is needed to ensure the safe and unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance to prevent further deterioration of the food security situation and to save lives.
