Iran strongly condemned a recent Israeli airstrike on Syrian territory as an act of aggression and violation of international law, amid rising regional tensions and renewed calls from Tehran for Israel to account for their military actions in Syria.
Nasser Kanaani of Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued an official statement condemning Israel for their latest attack near Syria’s capital Damascus, targeting military facilities near Damascus that caused significant damage and casualties, according to Syrian state media reports. Multiple individuals including military personnel as well as civilians were either killed or injured during these overnight raids.
“This criminal aggression highlights the true nature of Zionism, which has consistently violated the sovereignty and territorial integrity of sovereign UN member states with impunity,” Kanaani stated. Such attacks not only threaten regional peace and stability but also embolden terrorism.
Iran, long considered Syria’s longtime ally, has maintained an advisory presence there at the invitation of the Syrian government since 2011. Tehran insists its involvement is for fighting terrorism and aiding in rebuilding after years of civil war; Israel alleges otherwise and accuses Iran of using Syrian territory militarily to entrench itself militarily and supply arms to Hezbollah – something Iran and Syria deny.
Kanaani stressed: “This isn’t about defense or deterrence – this is part of an organized pattern of lawlessness and aggression carried out under the protection of Western governments.”
Israeli military has not offered specific comments regarding this strike but have admitted in the past to conducting “precision operations” against what it sees as Iranian militarization of Syria.
Iran has called upon the UN Security Council and international human rights organizations to condemn Israel’s repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty and take proactive steps against further attacks.
“The international community’s inaction has enabled Israel to conduct provocations without being held accountable,” stated Kanaani.
Syrian officials condemned Israel’s attack and asserted their right to defend against external aggression. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed it was part of Israel’s longstanding effort to destabilize Syria and prolong conflict.
Regional analysts warn that Israeli strikes against Syria could spark a wider confrontation, including both state and non-state actors. Iran has made clear its intention is not war, yet reserves the right to respond to threats against allies if necessary.
“This escalation is dangerous,” warned Middle East policy expert, Dr. Samira Khoury. If unchecked, these attacks risk starting a larger conflict across the region.
As tensions escalate, both Syria and Iran have pledged to strengthen their military and strategic cooperation in order to deter future attacks and protect national interests.
