Israeli authorities released an ambulance driver detained last month in relation to an incident which resulted in 15 rescue workers’ deaths on March 23 in Gaza, prompting international condemnation. It occurred amid violent fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian groups.

An ambulance driver – still unknown to the public – was taken into custody shortly after an explosion that claimed 15 medical personnel’s lives, including paramedics and first responders from both local and international humanitarian agencies. This attack happened as they attempted to evacuate civilians following an airstrike reported in northern Gaza Strip.

Israeli military officials claimed that an ambulance being used as cover by militant operatives justified a targeted strike by Israel; however, independent investigations conducted by human rights organizations did not uncover evidence of militant activity at the site; eyewitness accounts suggested instead that rescue convoy had coordinated beforehand with both Israeli and Palestinian authorities before beginning its rescue mission.

On Monday, Israel’s Defense Ministry announced that an ambulance driver had been released “due to lack of sufficient evidence of intentional wrongdoing.” A short statement added: “While this tragedy remains under investigation, he or she no longer presents as an imminent threat or suspect.

The release has generated mixed responses both domestically and internationally. Some lawmakers defended Israel’s decision, citing urban warfare’s complexity and rapid decisions needed for combat zones; other critics, including human rights activists, criticized its prematureness as well as lack of transparency.

Families of those killed reacted angrily and mournfully. One relative, Ahmed Al-Sawarka, expressed their disbelief at how their loved ones’ killers have gone free without answers or justice being delivered against them.

OCHA reiterated its call for an independent inquiry into the incident, stating “attacks on humanitarian staff are never acceptable and accountability must be ensured”.

This case has further compromised humanitarian access to Gaza. Multiple aid organizations have temporarily suspended operations in high-risk zones pending more assurances for staff safety.

As tensions remain elevated in the region, Israel has pledged to conduct its internal investigation and share any findings with international partners. Meanwhile, this incident has deepened global debate on protecting medical and humanitarian personnel operating in conflict zones.
